The compression calf guard and compression sock both have their respective strengths and purpose, and this synopsis hopefully helps define the attributes of each.
The 2XU Calf Guard (CG) is a simple but exceptionally effective “sleeve” designed primarily for the containment of the calf muscle when training and racing. Easy to fit, it simply slides over the foot and locates from the base of the ankle to the knee. Made from 50-denier lycra with circular knit construction, it’s powerful, durable and manages moisture particularly well. Its graduated design provides some circulation benefit also. The key function of the CG is supporting the calf muscle from the repeated vibration of each foot strike. This repeated muscle vibration is related to muscle damage (small tears) and fatigue. By containing the calf muscle and protecting the achilles and shin, the CG plays a major role during the extensive hours of training and racing. Other advantages of the CG are that runners can wear their preferred running sock and the lycra fabric handles moisture well, meaning the CG can be worn under a wetsuit for triathlons.
The 2XU Compression Sock has the advantage of being used for both active wear and recovery. The Race or Active sock (white) is designed with an anatomical (specific right & left fit) foot bed, which includes a specially knitted toe box and airflow channels. Like all running socks, the weight, thickness and how the sock feels in a running shoe are critical for comfort and performance. (Some foot blisters are caused by socks, not the shoe.) The Race or Active compression sock can be used for both active wear or recovery. Encasing the foot and ankle with a compression sock promotes circulation from the foot region and prevents blood pooling in this region (venous stasis). This happens mostly when sitting, standing or being static for long periods. The compression recovery socks are ideal for promoting circulation for faster recovery from training & racing. In some cases combining the recovery sock and tights together can be advantageous. 2XU recommends sleeping in the socks or tights to help enhance the circulation through the nighttime recovery phase. Flying is another example where socks provide protection from DVT (Deep Vein Thrombosis) caused by restricted circulation. Be mindful, the black recovery sock does not have a suitable foot bed for active use, but is exceptionally soft and comfortable, ideal for wearing as a dress sock at your place of work after that morning training session. So, 2XU Compression Calf Guards (CG) or 2XU Socks? The preference can come down to a personal choice. The compression socks are more suited than the CG for recovery, flying, and sleeping while the CG offers a good number of benefits for active use.
